UHURU TORCH TOUCHES 8 PROJECTS WORTH SH2.1 BILLION

Tarehe ya kuwekwa: June 13th, 2024

By Alex Nelson Malanga

Information Officer----Mbinga TC

Mbinga. The 2024 Uhuru Torch race team has on June 13 this year visited eight projects worth Sh2.1 billion in Mbinga Town Council (MTC).

Of the eight projects, the team laid a foundation stone for the construction of a Sh900 million worth MTC Hospital’s Outpatient Department (OPD), laboratory and theatre.

Icing on the cake, the team inaugurated a Sh421.423 million worth water project at Utiri village, Utiri ward, and Myangayanga Primary School’s two classrooms valued at Sh48 million.

On top of that, the team inspected the Utiri Seed Orchard project worth Sh27.2 million and a Sh725.273 million worth Mbinga Coffee Curing Company Limited (MCCCO).

A six-member Uhuru Race team led by Mr. Godfrey Eliakimu Mnzava also launched the Anti-Corruption Club in Mbinga Day Secondary School and inspected nutrition activities at Myangayanga ward.

Furthermore, the team distributed mosquito nets to pregnant women, mothers of children under five years of age and people with AIDs, the event of which took place at MTC Hospital, alias, Mbuyula.

In light of the above, the Uhuru Torch that would be handed over to Songea Municipal Council on June 14, 2024, covered 140 km.

The Uhuru Torch Race 2024 arrived in MTC at around 8.37am and to welcome the team was Mbinga District Commissioner Hon. Kisare Matiku Makori, who hosted a grand reception at Kilimani Ward-based Mhekela village.

Nyasa District Commissioner Hon. Peres Magiri handed over the Uhuru Torch to Hon. Makori moments after its arrival in MTC.

The Uhuru Torch race, whose theme is ‘conserve the Environment and Participate in Local Government Elections for a sustainable Nation’, was on April 2, 2024 launched in Kilimanjaro Region by the Prime Minister Hon. Kassim Majaliwa.

The Uhuru torch is a national symbol in Tanzania depicting freedom, equality, integrity, respect for human dignity, peace, hope, and strengthening union between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

The lighting of the Uhuru torch was made on National Independence Day on December 9, 1961 by the first president the late Mwl. Julius Kambarage Nyerere and later taken to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro as a symbol of national illumination.

The Uhuru torch aimed to enlighten and awaken the sense of nationalism, and illuminate the nation by saying “no” to poverty, inequality, illiteracy, diseases, ethnicity and racialism.
