MBINGA TC SURPASSES A TARGET OF PLANTING 1.5 MILLION TREES

Tarehe ya kuwekwa: February 1st, 2024

By Alex Nelson Malanga

Information Officer---Mbinga TC

Mbinga.  Mbinga Town Council has surpassed by 6.7 percent a target of planting 1.5 million trees per annum, it was revealed on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

President of the United Republic of Tanzania Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan is on record as directing each Council to plant 1.5 million trees on the annual basis, in an effort to fight environmental degradation and thus conserve the nature.

Speaking on Wednesday during the inauguration of the tree-planting campaign for students to re-green the country, Mbinga Town Council forest officer Mr. Sota January Ndunguru said already the Council in collaboration with forestry and environmental stakeholders had produced 1.6 million tree seedlings.

The launching of the campaign that was held at Kilimani Ward-based Mkwaya Primary School, was attended by Mbinga Town Council Vice Chairperson Hon. Alex Andoya, who was the Chief Guest, and Mbinga Town Acting Director Dr. Kung’e Nyamuryekung’e.

The list of attendees also included Mbinga Town Council Environmental Committee chairperson Hon.  Amanyisye Ngonepo, the Council’s Heads of department and unit and various forestry and environmental stakeholders.

“In the 2023/24 Financial Year, Mbinga Town Council in collaboration with various forestry and environmental stakeholders has so far produced 1.6 million tree seedlings,” said Mr. Ndunguru.

Stakeholders who have collaborated with Mbinga Town Council are Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), Tanzania Forest Fund and individuals.

Hon. Andoya for his part, called upon the public to stop environmental degradation that ranges from cutting trees to farming around water sources.

“It is high time you stopped environmental degradation and instead scale up efforts in tree planting activities,” underscored Hon. Andoya who doubles as Kilimani Ward Councillor.

Hon. Ngonepo, for his part, expressed the need for villages to come up with by-laws that pave a way for trees conservation.

“We don’t need to abandon the trees that we are planting today. We need to conserve them with a view to lessening the effects of climate change,” insisted Hon. Ngonepo who doubles as Betherehemu Ward Councillor.
